Join a racing crew and feel what the sport side of sailing is like. Dynamic teamwork, tactical decisions and the atmosphere of an inshore race, with an RYA instructor on board. The crew is put together for intermediate and experienced sailors who want to move their skills up a level.
You do not come along as ballast that pulls a rope when told. You are part of a team that trims the boat, reads the wind, plans the start and decides the strategy – and the instructor works through all of it with you, from the pre-start routine to the debrief after the finish. We do bring home good results, but that is not the point: the point is that you leave with skills you will use on every passage afterwards. It is a training sail that happens to start with a gun.
| Skill | What you will learn |
|---|---|
| Sail trim | setting the sails for speed in the wind and on the point of sail, reading the sail shape, working with the helm |
| The start | getting into the starting line-up, timing, right-of-way rules in a race and what to do when the start goes wrong |
| Strategy and tactics | reading wind and current, choosing a side of the course, deciding when the breeze shifts |
| Crew work | roles on deck, tacks and gybes at racing speed, spinnaker handling |
