The Royal Yachting Association was founded in November 1875 as the Yacht Racing Association, and renamed the RYA in 1953 at the royal family's request. It now plays the leading role worldwide in both racing and recreational sailing, training an average of 270,000 people a year across more than 2,400 training centres in 58 countries. Beyond the UK it is represented in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, India, South Africa, the United States and elsewhere. Its certificates are the most widely recognised skipper qualifications in the world, for sail and motor alike, and its teaching and examination standards are treated as the gold standard.
The idea underpinning RYA training is a thorough, high-quality system built on the voluntary principle of personal responsibility. Anyone aware of the risks of the sport takes active care of their own continuing education. The RYA expects this to produce a far higher level of safety than the one only apparently delivered by piles of thoughtless legislation and regulation, which tend in practice to be worked around anyway.
