RYA Day Skipper
National Yachting School » RYA Sail Crusing Courses » RYA Day Skipper
A course for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills.
During the RYA Day Skipper course you will learn the fundamental skills of how to skipper your yacht safely, responsibly and effectively. The skipper's task is much more than just navigate and drive the boat. He or she is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the whole crew. Skippering a yacht is not only about boat handling, navigation, pilotage and seamanship skills, it means also weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping and many other aspects.
With the help of your instructor you will learn how to be in charge and plan a short passage. A lot of time is devoted to boat handling and mooring under various conditions. You will visit as many different harbours and anchorages as possible to practice pilotage techniques. You will complete at least 4 night hours sailing to experience night pilotage and identify lights.
At the end of the RYA Day Skipper course you should be able and confident to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day.
Students who have successfully completed the Day Skipper course are awarded the RYA Day Skipper Completion certificate. This is the minimum proof of competence required by most charter companies if you plan to rent a yacht on your own.
