Ideal course for the complete beginner!
RYA Competent Crew is the ideal course for complete beginner to learn the basics and to enjoy the delights of sailing aboard a cruising yacht. It is also a good way for dinghy sailors to try yachting or for those who have already done some crewing but wish to learn the „right“ way.
Unlike most training centres, we offer a full 6 days course instead of the usual 5 days! You will spend 7 nights and 6 full sailing days on board, which means considerably more time for learning and practising.
At the end of the week you will have become, as the name suggests, a competent (and we hope) confident member of the crew.
You will be taught the fundamentals of crewing such as what to do when mooring or anchoring, knots, nautical terms, sail handling and helming, as well as how to live in the environment of a cruising yacht. Safety aspects are extremely inmportant on all RYA courses and you will also learn how to work with all the safety equipment on board.
During the RYA Competent Crew course you will be living for the whole week aboard the yacht. You will be sailing between the islands of Central Dalmatia, visiting different harbours and anchorages every day. If the weather allows, you will also experience a longer coastal passage, which includes sailing at night.
With a maximum of 5 students per course there is plenty of time for everybody to practice all the aspects of crew work. You are the crew – without you the sails won't go up and the boat won't be steered.
At the end you will be awarded the RYA Competent Crew Certificate.
Course Duration: 6 days (7 nights). Most courses start on Saturday evening and finish the next Saturday in the morning.
Previous Experience Required: None
Course Content: Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties, manners and customs, rules of the road, dinghies
Minimum age: none (note: we do not accept unaccompanied children under 18)
